Celebrate Valentine’s Day With LOVE TO STAY

It’s Valentine’s Day! Are you ready? I’m sure you’ve already gathered cards, chocolates, and flowers for your loved ones, haven’t you?

The holiday gives us the chance to reflect and celebrate our special relationships. I can think of no better way to do that than with Love to Stay: Sex, Grace, and Commitment by Adam Hamilton (Abingdon Press, 2013). If you’ve still got some shopping to do, this book would make a great gift for your spouse (and your marriage).

This is no ordinary book for couples about love and marriage. Foundational to this book is a survey Pastor Hamilton conducted among 5100 people within his church congregation. This survey measured marital and sexual satisfaction, as well as attitudes about faith, prayer, and church attendance.

I won’t spoil all the findings for you, but guess what? Pastor Hamilton’s survey revealed that married couples who pray and worship together typically have stronger, more fulfilling marriages and physical relationships.

In Love to Stay, Adam Hamilton offers specific counsel for couples who want to make their marriages stronger again. He touches on practicing selfless love, forgiveness, and gratitude. At the end of each chapter is a “Reflect and Engage” section, which offers great starters for discussion and prayer and some “real life” ideas to help you apply and practice the lessons learned in the chapter.

Hamilton is also mindful of singles and directs sections of the book to those not yet married. The survey also included single people and their attitudes towards the opposite sex and marriage. For this reason, I think single people would benefit from this book, as well. It’s a great handbook for learning to be the man or woman one would want to marry.

One of my favorite parts of the book is the Appendix B: “Advice of Couples Married 50+ Years.” This is a simple, bulleted list of quotes from people who have weathered the ups and downs of love and life and come out on the other side with a stronger faith and solid, lifelong marriages. Among the gems: “Kiss her every night before going to bed,” and “Forgive and forget. Don’t hold grudges. Be friends.”

What’s a better Valentine’s Day gift than an investment in your most precious relationship—your marriage? I highly recommend Adam Hamilton’s Love to Stay: Sex, Grace, and Commitment for helping you do just that.

I hope you and yours have a Happy Valentine’s Day!
